English, circa 1660, ebonised oval mirror frame

English, circa 1660, carved and ebonised oval mirror frame with ribbon twist sight moulding, scrolling acanthus leaf and pomegranate ornament surmounted by a phoenix.

As classical motifs of regeneration, the pomegranate and phoenix ornament may suggest that this mirror has Restoration associations with the return of the monarchy, King Charles II in 1660. The pomegranate is a symbol of resurrection associated with the Greek goddess Proserpina, who returned every spring to regenerate the earth. The phoenix, a fabulous bird from classical mythology, lived to a great age, finally burning itself on a funeral pyre from which a new young phoenix arose. The phoenix is also a Christian symbol of resurrection.

Frame retains the original mercurial mirror glass & backboard.
